The burning of Fort du Portage, or Little Fort Niagara : Fort du Portage, or Fort Little Niagara was a small fort and trading post that protected the portage on the upper Niagara River. With the coming of the British in the French and Indian War, the French burned the fort to keep it out of British hands and retreated to Fort Niagara. The fort was re-created on May 30, 2009 on the banks of the upper Niagara River, not far from the site of the original fort. A camp with fur traders, artisans, Indians and French soldiers drilling and firing muskets and cannon showed what life was like in 1759. At the end of the day, the crowd of spectators watched as a runner arrived with news the British were coming and the fort was burned as the garrison marched off to Fort Niagara.
